RSWC – 3rd of July ++

Rob, Kelley, Chu, and I all got together for a sweet Chengdu-style barbecue (authentically pictured above) in Sacramento’s Tahoe Park (just down the street from where I’m living right now). There was a little BBQ place across the street from the place I worked last summer that had all sorts of stuff on a stick that you buy and they grill for you in a really spicy sauce. For whatever reason I’ve been missing Jiading a little recently, so I was super pumped to try and recreate it in Sacramento. All in all it was decent, I thought. Chu ripped it up with some chicken, lamb, tofu, vegetables, and pineapple. I had an assist with some mango guacamole and lighting the charcoal. I think we made a boner covering part of the grill with foil (to protect the vegetables from sticking/falling into the fire). I think the foil ended up reflecting a lot of the heat so it took forever for the vegetables to get appropriately charred. Live and learn.
Also in that category, a pall was cast over the entire affair by two jerk park patrol guys citing Rob for drinking in a city park. Not only does Rob now have a criminal record, but he also has to pay a ridiculously heavy fine. All of which happened about 30 seconds after our arrival at the park. Apparently I’ve been Rob’s Typhoid Mary recently, since he also got a speeding ticket after dropping Chu and I off a few weeks ago. Sorry, Rob!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway I hope you guys are having a sweet 4th and everything.
Miniblog
- Dual Transform – A pretty cool text adventure if you’re into that.
- Stoked that Avatar: The Last Airbender is a total critical failure. I know it sucks for Shyamalan but he made his bed. I feel worse for the Delgo people. Plus there’s this.
- For some reason I watched the Rent movie because it was on TV. Found it 100% disgusting. I think out of all of the characters the only people I didn’t think were horrible, terrible people were Taye Diggs (the villain) and a smokin’ hot Tracie Thoms.
Tracy Thorn – “Why Does the Wind?”

YES Tracie Thoms, i love her. and YES Taye Diggs, Roc pride.
how much did Rob have to pay for the fine?! yikes.
i’m doing shit for the 4th, just working on Shadoweyes 2, staying home alone, gearing up to complain like an old man about the noise, and watching primarily movies that feature the destruction of American society!!! >:D

oh yeah and Avatar, too, hehhehheh. what a mess. you should’ve linked to Ebert’s hilarious review or that io9 “why do we privilege the story of the hero’s progress over the tree” review.

I don’t know zach, rent? On a partially related note, do you remember the name of that indie band from a few years ago, it was a like a choir dressed in white robes and you couldn’t tell how serious it was, they had a music video too? anyway, they had should have had those people be in rent. I’ve been trying to remember the name of that band recently.
I like gaucamole alot, but I’m not sure about adding mangos.
I appreciate that tracey thorn has a jp-8000, she must have discovered, as did I, that it delivers a great range of electronic timbre

mark,
polyphonic spree. anyway, rent was a travesty. at first i was kind of into the fact that it was this late 80s dystopic thing, like end-of-the-century/world-is-ending pathos. But at the same time I just couldn’t get past the fact that the main plot revolves around a bunch of self-centered asshole artists who believe themselves to literally be above the law. Like Taye Diggs’ unforgivable offense is that he wants to kick out the homeless who are illegally occupying his building so that he can finish renovating it to help reinvigorate a dilapidated neighborhood.
Adam Pascal’s character is a documentary filmmaker and it’s one of those things where you just sit there wondering who on earth would even view let alone release his documentary. When he finally shows it at the end of the movie it’s just a superficially abstract recap of the events of Rent with poignant shots of Angel who has recently succumbed to AIDS.
Anyway I’ll make the mango guacamole for river night and you can try it firsthand.

zach: don’t forget dan can’t eat mangoes, we should make two types of guacamole. i had some mango slices recently and i got all these sores and swelling on my lips, like super-chapping, it was gross.
speaking of text games, remember Usurper? that fucking rocked.
i was going to post a bunch of mini-movie reviews, sort of a cross-post of my Undisputed 3 review plus some new stuff, but i lost the motivation. -_-

I’m calling the City Court tomorrow to explain the situation, and will let you know if I’m successful in pleading my case and getting the fine reduced or eliminated.

rob: I’ll cross my fingers for you.
zach: thanks for the catch with that band. btw is spree not an awesome candy?
but yeah, rent definitely sounds pretty 80s. I’ll have to look into it. is there any shred?
regarding the avatar movie. I haven’t seen it and don’t really have any interest. I think fantasy is probably the hardest genre for hollywood to make. and that’s in addition to all the casting problems with the movie. I guess it’s surprising that it’s doing this bad though. I don’t remember a whole lot about the show, but more the discussions we had about it and your guys reactions to it. was it the show with “the dude” character or was that something else?

If you want to see a great movie, so see “The Secret in their Eyes.” Kelley and I saw it a couple of weeks ago – incredible.
July 6th, 2010 at 5:46 pm
Rob: does Secret In Their Eyes have aliens or cyborgs in it?
July 6th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
Ross: nope, just detectives from Argentina! It’s an Argentine movie about a retired cop who, in trying to write a novel based on an unsolved crime, ends up revisiting the crime itself and becomes obsessed with finally closing the case. There’s also some political content, a love story, and some humor.
But the title would make for a good cyborg/alien/zombie-based movie where the evil cyborgs/aliens/zombies are given away by their creepy eyes.

rob, sounds like a K-horror movie.
July 7th, 2010 at 3:01 am
Interestingly, the original title in Spanish is “El segredo de sus ojos,” which could translate as “The Secret in Their Eyes” (as was chosen for the U.S. release), or “The Secret of Their Eyes,” which might lend itself to the sci-fi/K-horror usage of the title!
