Review Rodeo: Ichi

I fear that my barrage of reviews in the past few days has had a dampening effect on the rs community. Although I suspect everyone is busy with summertime fun. I know I’m all over the place with the job hunt.

Mini Blog: Is this the greatest page on wikipedia? The correct answer: could be.

I wanted to give a mention to ross’s latest project Shadoweyes. He’s been posting pages for free online and I’m liking it. I especially like the girls’ feet on page 8.

I was playing some Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time last night. I’m like, really?! Who’s going to see the movie? Or should I ask, who’s going to see the movie again?

Trying to set up the “Darren Interview Part 2″ podcast but that’s pretty tough.

ICHI: I can not get over this picture.

This is what this movie is about. The tear, the blush, the way she holds the sword backhanded. This is a picture of strength and resolve.

Zatoichi has been featured in a number of films. The basic character: a blind master swordsman travelling through feudal Japan using his skills to help the downtrodden. I however only knew of the series from the 2003 film which was good but didn’t leave the same kind of impression on me as ICHI did.

ICHI, takes the basic premise of the Zatoichi movies but makes the main character a female goze singer. The movie begins with Ichi rescuing one of her fellow goze singers from a group of lowlifes. During that encounter she meets the other main character, Toma, a ronin who’s completely badass when wielding a stick but who is psychologically incapable of drawing a blade. There is some pretty good chemistry here with Ichi as the icy, wounded, and quiet beauty and Toma the kind hearted dork. Though Ichi is eminently talented I really liked that she does not come across as completely invincible. Definitely watch this movie, Ichi shreds on the shamisen. Also, really loved the period wardrobe, especially Ichi’s main outfit.

I just checked out some of the Shadoweyes pages. Looks great. Ross: I hope that mention of prune juice was at least a partial Worf reference!

Ross channeling some “keep on truckin’” there XD

I put Ichi onto my queue after the next ST:tNG disk. Also still have to watch some wolf & spice episodes.

Mark so you mean you want to see PoP? Or since everybody already saw it you want to go see it a second time?? I almost busted prince of persia out a while ago to replay it but never did. I was deep into Cursed Mountain for the Wii at the time. Embarrassing that months after buying a Wii that’s the only game I own other than Wii sports, and that only because it was going at bargain basement prices from Buy.com.

  3. mark Says:

definitely similar to keep on trucking!

that’s awesome that you put ichi on your queue. remember when we all went to see zatoichi, that was cool. where are you at the moment in tng.

I guess I was trying to make a joke by assuming that everyone but me had already seen prince of persia. I’d be into it but it’s not the kind of movie I’d want to go to alone. too many chances for discussion.

didn’t know you bought a wii. did you get mega man 10 yet, or any of the downloadable stuff. but don’t feel bad. I’ve had the wii way longer than that and I have 3 games. I’ve been meaning to check out the side scrolling rpg muramasa.

i wonder what Dan, being the ultimate Zatoichi fan, would think about this. probably hate it. Mark, isn’t “female goze” redundant? ;)

what is “keep on truckin”? how am i channeling it?? thanks for the Shadoweyes plug, Mark! even though i imagine everyone reading this site is already aware of it. -_-

Zach: what is Cursed Mountain? is it any good? wikipedia says it’s survival horror, i didn’t know you were into that kind of stuff. hehheh: http://media.strategywiki.org/images/e/e2/Cursed_Mountain_eu_cover.jpg

Rob: haha, no, the prune juice/Worf thing was coincidental, i didn’t remember that “warrior’s drink!” thing until after the fact and somebody reminded me of it. but i used prune juice because it’s such a “stuffy” drink and Scout is stuffy, so it seemed a good fit. i also thought Scout would be concerned with intestinal regularity, which is in contrast to another character in the comic, Noah, who has irritable bowels and constipation, so it’s kind of a contrast between them.

  5. mark Says:

I guess female goze is redundant. Just wanted to make clear for anybody who might not be familiar with zatoichi that it’s normally a guy that’s the main character. I imagine that dan would probably be into this, at least Ichi. Can’t imagine that he’s invested in a particular characterization of zatoichi but I could be wrong. He would probably hate the Toma guy though.

if you google keep on truckin it’s the first thing that comes up. I guess it’s an crumb thing.

yeah zach, you never seemed to be into those kind of games except when we went to see silent hill. I do remember you playing xenosaga. I kind of want to play resident evil 4 which my brother said was pretty good.

but yeah ross, I thought you were going for the same thing with the prune juice. But wouldn’t Noah also want to drink prune juice to alleviate the symptoms? I haven’t gotten to that character yet. (on a related note I was getting some serious acid which I think was caused by eating too many starburst and I bought some tums). on a more general note I think we get some readership outside of the normal circle but I could be wrong. I was going to ask if you could resize the shadoweyes banner to be the same width as the roaring shark side bar image so I could put a fixed promotion, although the color scheme would definitely clash.

  6. ross Says:

Mark: i meant that “goze” are ONLY female, if i’m right, anyway. aren’t they blind women? can’t really have a male goze. ;)

i think Dan is almost exclusively only into the Shintaro Katsu Zatoichi. i think he said he enjoyed the one that we went to see, i think it was the Takeshi Kitano one, but that it paled in comparison. i wonder if he would buy a female Ichi, tough to say. i’ll try to remember to ask him.

haha, oh okay, i get the keep on truckin thing now. XD

Noah’s role is minor in Shadoweyes 1 so the bowels thing is barely mentioned, and it’s still pretty minor when he has a bigger role in Shadoweyes volume 2, but he says in v.2 that prune juice doesn’t work for him, heh. so it’s like… Scout is into prune juice because of the bowel regularity but that doesn’t work for Noah who can likely NEVER achieve regularity, so… oh whatever, i guess it’s kind of a dumb, off-the-cuff comparison between the two characters, it’s not a big thing, but i thought it was funny. XD

i guess you could change Roaring Shark’s color scheme to match the Shadoweyes banner… ;)

  7. mark Says:

ross, I guess I should have made it a parenthetical thing just in case somebody didn’t know what zatoichi or goze are. but you’re right.

maybe we can do a month of the shadoweyes color scheme although I am wedded to the green and yellow (shakespeare reference unintended)

  8. ross Says:

Shadoweyes month at Roaring Shark, everything is black and blue! XD

  9. rob Says:

We should definitely promote the hell out of Shadoweyes on Roaring Shark. Maybe Ross could draw the Roaring Shark logo in the Shadoweyes title font?

  10. mark Says:

    I’m all over it

  11. ross Says:

    YEAH! :D
what do i have to do, mark? make a logo in the right dimensions i guess?

  12. mark Says:

ross, yeah, if you can make an image that’s the same width (the height can be longer if you would like) as the graph image I can put that in the sidebar. I have a copy of the shadoweyes banner so I can match the color scheme. if you really want to go all out also make a banner that’s around 620 pixels wide.
