This action sequence brought to you by rows and rows of Soviet-made automobiles!

    Some observations:

    1. That guy is one tough badass.
    2. People really underestimate the usefulness of horses for law enforcement. There’s no way you could have chased that guy through those busy, crowded streets (or through a store, or a bus) in a squad car. A motorcycle maybe, but with the horse you’ve got the height advantage as well.
    3. Not sure you can slide on a horse (under a truck, but wouldn’t it be cool if you could?). And I also question the fact that things start blowing up only at the tail end of the chase. But very, very solid otherwise.
    4. I like the fact that whoever directed this movie didn’t just have the dude on the horse jump through a random pane of glass or ride head-on into a fruit cart, but incorporated the glass-shattering, fruit-spilling, and other chaos into other moments of the chase.
    5. The fact that he rides through a consumer goods store – priceless social satire.
    6. They obviously wanted him alive, since the cops could have avoided the whole chase by just shooting the dude.

Zach: your silence regarding this film clip is disappointing. Surely you have time to take out of your busy schedule as an overworked post-doc to comment on a horse sliding under a truck! ;)

    hahah called out!!!!!

i confess i didn’t know exactly what to add to this clip. at first i thought the main guy was the same guy from the benny lava video, but i don’t think that’s true (extremely impressive double-bill though if it is the same guy).

the only thing that troubled me was the apparent horse-cruelty when the horse cops have the big pile up. hoping those were either somehow fake horses or the neck-twisting they go through is not as bad as it looks.

I figured this clip deserved your expert commentary!

That’s true about the horses. While the horse slide was obviously staged, it did look like the other horse scenes might not have involved special effects.

I’m just really impressed by the sequence in general – it manages to be both totally ridiculous and a pretty sweet action scene in a conventional sense. And I love the fact that it just randomly ends with a bunch of cars exploding, like, “OK audience, in case you’re not totally convinced that this is five minutes of pure adrenaline-pumping awesomeness, here’s a line of cars that are totally going to explode.”

yeah, sucks about the horses, it does look bad. i imagine the cruelty laws are different. :(
