crazy FF13 review.

i skimmed over much of it, as you’ll probably end up doing too, but i like how the nature of the review itself seems to be a meta-review of the game; you experience the review as this reviewer experienced the game.

yeah, I read through the first couple of paragraphs and I was like I might as well just finish reading until I saw how long the review actually was and felt that the guy was just saying the same thing over and over again.
I thought it approached pitchfork level pretense. anyway, I think he’s laying it on pretty thick with the criticism, probably trying to get people riled up. admittedly I’m not really in the know about jrpgs but is it really necessary to spend so much time talking about the battle system.
if I remember correctly the battle system was developed to give people a sense of participating in advent children style fights. which if that’s true might be cool. ultimately, though, it’ll come down to the characters and story which is largely a subjective thing.

i guess a lot of fans are primarily interested in the battle system of these games, so i think the reviewer was doing it for them and also sort of making fun of them. the best stuff is at the end, though, he’s got some pretty good zingers in the later paragraphs and also when he talks about the FF13 behind the scenes/production stuff, and the Tetsuya Nomura character sketch scenario. XD
the reviewer himself is pretty obnoxious but i admit i was already slanted against this game to begin with, so that’s why i enjoyed his occasional funny observation/statement. “The characters in Final Fantasy XIII are all more afraid of fan outrage than they are probably afraid of the impending end of the world.” haha.
i didn’t mean to get you riled up, mark.

I didn’t get too riled up. It just pushes my buttons a little when I sense someone is being overly critical just to foment some rage.
yeah, I appreciated the big text “still talking about the game” that was pretty funny as I was scrolling through to see how long it actually was. but yeah, I thought parts of it were pretty funny.
but yeah, I’ve read some reviews and heard some people talk about the game and no one made it to be so annoying and I actually think the linearity could be cool.

people were griping about “linearity” or whatever that means when FF10 came out, too. i don’t really get what hasn’t been linear about pretty much every other FF game. i think when a game has a lot of cut scenes or lack of open world map people are like “IT’S TOO LINEAR.” but it’s not like the story changes depending on how much of the area or town or “easter eggs” you unearth, even everybody’s favorite FF7 still basically directed you where to go in terms of the story, and the storyline was the same every time you played the game whether or not you got some secret item or something. so yeah i don’t really get what people are complaining about in terms of that.
did anybody here play FF12? this FF13 review went on for a while about FF12 for some reason and it got me thinking about it again that it’s one i’m still sort of interested in playing, maybe just because it seems so different from the others and it’s by the Tactics/Vagrant Story people instead of Tetsuya Nomura, and it has a rabbit-eared girl in a thong.

it surprised me, playing ff7 again, how linear the game was after you get out of midgar. I remembered the first part obviously being a very set path you follow. but I didn’t remember how many towns you have to go through before you can actually get to a larger part of the map. that’s linear in one sense. but from what I understand ffxiii is even more linear in that it’s almost like you’re going down a road and random encounters aren’t as much a part of the gameplay. I think there’s a style of rpg play where you find the places with the strongest monsters, grind for a while and then resume the story. I’m kind of a noob when it comes to these things but I remember doing that the first time I played ffvii.
I haven’t played 12. although I did watch this mega 64
