The Ballad of Zach

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Ok, as I said I would I wrote the ballad of zach. Of course this is my interpretation. I hope you enjoy, it was my intention to do a ballad of everybody here. This sort of came out of two things, one is the music from Diablo II which I like. The riff at the beginning is similar to one of the songs. Also I’ve been thinking about Shadow of the Colossus recently and was trying to do a version of some of the music which is in G minor. Obviously I played sotc on zach’s ps2. There are some mistakes in here but I’m pretty happy with this one, and I was just kind of having fun in the middle part. I wanted to have an ambient track of like forest sounds or rain in the forest, maybe I’ll do that at some point.

Definitely been neglecting the site recently. Zach’s been doing an awesome job keeping it alive even though he’s probably busiest of all. That’s why I’ve begun writing the “Ballad of Zach.”

I’ve been having some reservations about my fanfic. Although I have a pretty clear idea where to take the story I fear that I’m not as good a guitarist as Cloud, so I’m pretty self conscious being such a fan of the world. I’d like to find a way to keep posting music and to keep posting fanfic chapters however.

With the exception of “Survival Quest,” starring the underrated dermot mulroney haven’t watched too much to review. Although I have put Halo Legends on the queue so hopefully I’ll have a review up shortly although the word on the street is that it’s hit and miss.

2 second hate

Friday, February 19th, 2010

For whatever reason Eric Clapton has always grated on me. I think it was one of those arbitrary middle school/high school decisions that I’ve never really had reason to revise. Anyway this cell phone commercial has been on non-stop during the olympics and I’m super sick of it. The thing I hate the most is the “move” Clapton does at 0:15. Other lowlights include the song (“I get off on ’57 Chevys” cannot think of a less interesting thing to get off on) and Clapton doing his best Earthworm Jim impression at 0:11.

type in http://www.roaringshark.com – not too shabby. i think the choices of instruments might be a little random after listening to the roaringshark song several times, and some are definitely better than others…

Unofficial Bourne movie of the year:

I don’t know anything about the Halo franchise but it would be cool if we all got this from Netflix and posted our thoughts.

Crazies remake??

can’t post that without posting the classic original trailer. “….the CRAZIES.”

remember that clip of the guy on a horse sliding under a truck here’s the rest of the sequence it’s pretty sweet

No Jacket Required

Recent shows at The Fire Escape:

Fri 2/5: DEFYANT CIRCLE, TBA

Sat 2/6: THE NICKEL SLOTS; HELPYOURSELF; MUSICAL CHARIS (possible typo?)

Sun 2/7: SCOWNDROLLS; TAGYOURDEAD; CHASER; CALL THE COPS; FUTURE DAYDREAM

NOTES:

1) Intentionally incorrect spelling (e.g. Defyant Circle) and an odd agglutinative tendency (Helpyourself) are revealing themselves to be the two dominant tendencies in Fire Escape band nomenclature, along with, of course, potty humor (Sexrat, Blownload – incidentally both agglutinative as well). The ultimate Fire Escape band name would combine all three of these tendencies, as in “Blownlowd.”

2) As a name, “Tagyourdead” is somewhat unclear.  As it reads now, it seems to imply an admonition to “tag your dead,” which sounds rather boringly like something you’d say to your kid the first time he takes down a deer on a hunting trip. “Tagyouredead,” as in “Tag! You’re dead!” would probably register as more badass in the world of The Fire Escape, suggesting some sort of lethal, satanic game of Laser Tag, though perhaps the band members considered an extra “e” an effeminate excess.

I don’t know how to say this. Where do I even begin?

I have found perhaps the greatest piece of music.

Entering the lexicon

Friday, February 5th, 2010

One of Zach’s favorite sub-genre descriptions – butt rock – gets some exposure in Paste, from Barry Blasengame’s review of the Midlake album, The Courage of Others:

“The disappointing thing about most Molly Hatchet albums – beside the fact that they’re horrible – is the blatant deception of their covers.  During the band’s heyday, Hatchet albums featured a hulking, wide-eyed barbarian swinging a massive battleaxe as sinew and bits of bone fell about him like crimson snow.  It was, in a word, badass.  But when you dropped the needle, out came a sickening bilge of chuggin’ boogie blues and butt rock.  The only thing hemorrhaging was your ears.”
