Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Here’s episode 3 of the RS Podcast. First I discuss guided meditation. Then darren and I break into a wide ranging conversation of topics including: fallout from last episode, the issue of women in Star Trek The Next Generation, Darren’s performance art, laptops versus desktops, accelera deck and the scarcelight label, reunions, anime, reading books, 1984 and 1985, conspiracy, Half Life Merchandise, butts up, and finally we get redacted by the NWO!

Thanks for listening! (Strong Language Advisory)

First impressions: Guns N’ Roses, Chinese Democracy

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

There’s really not much I can add to the early, surprisingly positive feedback on Chinese Democracy that Chuck Klosterman’s very funny and perceptive review in the Onion’s AV Club hasn’t covered.  I suggest that you read his piece, regardless of your opinions on Axl Rose, “Welcome to the Jungle” or Slash’s top hat.  The almost shocking reality of Chinese Democracy’s imminent release is a true pop culture event that merits at least some level of our attention.  Plus, seeing Guns N’ Roses (or rather, Axl and some anonymous dudes) triumphantly rise from the dead some fifteen years after we last heard from them, or land with a resounding thud amidst mass indifference, will be equally entertaining.

Anoraak – Nightdrive with You

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

hot pink palm trees
You guys might or might not remember me posting a song a while back by french artist Anoraak. He’s part of the Valerie collective, which is home to fellow artists The Outrunners, College, and 7he Myriads. At the time there were only a couple downloads available from Discodust and his own Myspace to choose from. Now, though, he’s released a proper album, “Nightdrive with You,” available from the Rough Trade website.

I think the fact that I’m reviewing it is probably all the information you need to know that I think it’s pretty incredible. Very Daft Punk-meets-M83 with some New Order influences going on, too. I honestly think everybody here will like it, so definitely peep the myspace page to get a better idea of what it sounds like. Here’s a track from the new album, too (shh!). Midnight Stars:

But anyway, my main reason for this post is as a counterpoint to Mark’s comments on Friday. Mark was lamenting that he’s always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like when we were growing up, our formative musical years were spent in what was in his opinion a veritable wasteland of shitty grunge and other similarly unsatisfying sonic endeavors. That might be true, but in addition to having been kids when the best cartoons were on the air, we also now have the freedom to enjoy hot shit like Anoraak’s new album. It’s like patience rewards.
