Monday morning probability question (Kac Ring)

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Suppose 20 white and brown hamsters run around a circular track, they move at a constant speed, that they are constantly in motion and that they each complete a lap in 30 seconds. Also, assume that on the track are 100 markers randomly placed and such that whenever a hamster passes a marker his or her coat changes color from white to brown or brown to white. At the moment you started watching the hamsters all were white. After one hour what is the mean value associated with the hamsters if we count 1 for each brown hamster and -1 for each white hamster.
